Commemorating their legacy
The Pacific Theatre, saw some of the most brutal and defining conflicts in World War II. Bougainville, Guadalcanal, Wake Island, Midway, Okinawa, Iwo Jima and the Coral Sea, are more than just names in history books. They defined the Allies’ fighting spirit and a determination to succeed, no matter what was thrown at them. In fact, the Pacific Theatre has been described as, ‘hands down the war’s most hated theatre in which to fight.’ And fight they did. United States and Commonwealth casualties amounted to around 660,000, with hundreds of thousands wounded.
The South Pacific World War II Museum has the opportunity to become the preeminent destination for the remembrance of those US service men and women who fought so bravely to defend freedom in the Pacific region. No where else in the South Pacific is there a destination that fulfils this important role. The Pacific warrants a destination of this calibre and Espiritu Santo deserves it.
