Bomber Airfield No 3

With the massive influx of bombers to Santo, a need grew for a third bomber airfield, to be known as Bomber Airfield No 3. Almost the same size as Bomber Airfield No 2 at 6,800 feet (2073 metres) in length, the airfield was supported by an enormous number of taxiways and hardstands cut straight out of the surrounding jungle. And due to its location in the foothills to the west of Luganville, construction required extensive cuts into the surrounding hard coral subsoil. Further information on Santo’s airfields can be found here.
