When Bob Hope Came To Santo
A wonderful story that came out of the war. Bob Hope was once asked what his favourite gig was. Funnily enough it came on the Pacific Ocean island of Espiritu Santo, whose small U.S. Navy garrison wrote Hope requesting a visit. Hope passed the letter on to the Pentagon, which replied that the runway on the island wasn’t long enough to handle the transport plane Hope used. The comedian sent that response to the men on the island, who promptly extended the runway.
“It was the greatest audience I ever had,” said Hope. “There were 500 guys out there and they sat through a rainstorm during the show. Where can you get an audience like that? You want to go again and again.”
